How to Choose the Right Monitor

Why Monitor Specifications Matter

When purchasing a new monitor, understanding the key specifications can help you make an informed decision. Different use cases—gaming, photo editing, office work, or video production—demand different features. Our comparison tool makes it easy to evaluate monitors side by side, highlighting the strengths and trade-offs of each model.

Panel Types Explained

IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels offer the best color accuracy and viewing angles, making them ideal for creative work. VA (Vertical Alignment) panels provide superior contrast ratios and deeper blacks, great for movies and gaming in dark rooms. TN (Twisted Nematic) panels have the fastest response times but poor viewing angles. OLED panels deliver perfect blacks and infinite contrast but may suffer from burn-in over extended use.

Resolution & Pixel Density

Higher resolutions like 4K (3840×2160) provide sharper text and more workspace, but require a more powerful GPU for gaming. For monitors 27 inches and under, 1440p (2560×1440) offers an excellent balance of sharpness and performance. At 24 inches, 1080p (1920×1080) is still perfectly adequate for most users.

Refresh Rate & Response Time

A higher refresh rate (144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz) provides smoother motion, which is especially noticeable in fast-paced games and when scrolling. Response time affects how quickly pixels can change color; lower is better. For competitive gaming, look for 1ms response time and 144Hz+ refresh rate. For office work and content creation, 60Hz is sufficient.
